Panda pair to live at Siberian tiger base
A SIBERIAN tiger breeding base in northeast China’s Jilin Province is to care for two giant pandas from the beginning of next month, local forestry authorities said yesterday.
The pair, an 8-year-old male and a 7-year-old female, will live at the base for three years for both public viewing and scientific research, Wang Wei, deputy director of the provincial forestry department, said.
Pandas usually avoid the region due to its colder temperatures, preferring the warmer habitat of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, Wang said.
The pandas are coming from the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan. Its staff will train the pandas’ new keepers, said Yu Changchun, of the forestry department’s wildlife protection bureau.
The pandas’ enclosure will comprise 900 square meters of covered accommodation with an additional outdoor space of 4,800 square meters. The cost of the project has been put at 14 million yuan (US$2.25 million).
