Panel backs midwife in patient sewing claim
HEALTH authorities of Shenzhen City in south China's Guangdong Province have denied a patient's claim that a midwife had taken revenge upon her by sewing up her anus during her labor after the family failed to pay her a good tip.
A preliminary investigation found no evidence supporting the sewing claim, The Shenzhen Health Bureau and Shenzhen Population and Family Planning Commission said yesterday at a press conference.
Instead, the midwife had applied a treatment to cure hemorrhoid bleeding during the patient's labor -- totally out of her good-heartedness, though breaching her professional practice, said Zhou Fu, an official with the Shenzhen Health Bureau.
The patient's husband surnamed Chen claimed the midwife, surnamed Zhang, had hinted that he give her extra money before the child's birth last Friday. But Chen only gave her 100 yuan (US$15) which she thought too meager and sparked Zhang's revenge.
Zhang denied ever hinting for money, which was strictly banned by the hospital. She said she found the money in her pocket and returned it to Chen the next day.
She denied ever using a needle during the patient's labor.
Four medical experts from two Shenzhen hospitals were sent to make a checkup of the patient yesterday.
Two of the experts said they were unable to judge whether the midwife had used a needle on the patient.
But the patient's anus is not sealed up and works normally, they said.
