Paper mill in pollution scandal closed

A paper mill in central China's Henan Province said to have "forced" villagers to use unprocessed waste water to irrigate crops has been closed.

The plant in Xiaokuai Village was said to have pumped out underground water, drying farmers' wells, the local Dahe Daily newspaper reported today.

Growers were left with the option of buying processed water from the plant.

Many villagers refused to spend money on clean water which should have been free of charge, but couldn't stand to see their crops being killed in drought.

Therefore, they used free but polluted waste water, the newspaper reported.

Provincial environmental protection investigators confirmed the severe water pollution.

Waste water discharge pipes have been sealed and the factory closed.

Meanwhile, another Henan Province paper mill, in Chengguan Town, has been forced to remove old-fashioned equipment and pulled down a workshop after it was found to be illegally operation despite a ban over severe polluting.
