Paper planes reveal 'prisoners' of math summer camp

SOME children in Xi'an, the capital of northwest Shaanxi Province, were forced to attend an illegal Mathematical Olympiad summer camp and they were locked in a classroom and had to get help by throwing paper planes downstairs, Chinese Business View reported today.

This summer camp was on the seventh floor of a computer store on the campus of Xi'an Jiao Tong University. The camp organizer locked an iron door on the landing of the seventh floor to keep the young students from leaving.

On Sunday morning, passers-by noticed four paper planes gliding down from the seventh floor, written with words: "We're having math classes on the seventh floor. Please help us!"

Local education authorities arrived around 10:40am but they could not reach the seventh floor. After about 20 minutes, the children got out from another exit in the building.

One child told the newspaper that there were about 50 grade-five students in the summer camp. "We don't want to come to this place, but our parents made us to come," he said.

The education authorities are still investigating the case.
