Paper products removed over quality problems

BEIJING'S market watchdog has ordered 43 paper products to be removed from shelves after they were found with various quality problems.

Carcinogenic substances and excessive bacteria were two of the problems found.

A paper cup made by Beijing Yilong Paper & Plastic Packing Co Ltd was found to have fluorescent agents, which are bleaching chemicals that may cause cancer in large amounts.

A Nepia facial tissue made by Oji Paper, a Japanese company, was on the list due to poor softness.

The tissue was produced by Oji's Suzhou factory in July 2011.

It failed the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce's quality test late last month.

Nepia tissues and Maryya paper cups, a brand made by a Hebei company, failed tests for poor color fastness and a labeling problem.

Some wet wipes were found containing excessive fungal colonies.

A paper cup made by Hunan Victory Paper & Plastic Packing Co Ltd, an authorized Wal-Mart supplier, was tested with poor color fastness.

The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau, Shanghai's market watchdog, said it was monitoring the situation but that it had not ordered a recall.

Officials told consumers to avoid paper cups that turn blue under fluorescent lights as they may contain excessive fluorescent agents.
