Parched earth

A man walks across dry, cracked farmland in Liujiang County, southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

About 409,000 hectares of crops have been hit by drought. August temperatures in the region were 1.4 degrees Celsius higher than the average, with 57 percent less rain than normal. More than 2 million people have been mobilized to help provide water and irrigate 157,000 hectares of land. No rain is forecast this week. - Xinhua
