Parents: Police forced us to take compensation

PARENTS of children who died after a vehicle carrying 20 primary school students plunged into a river, killing 14, in Hunan Province said they were forced by the police to sign compensation deals.

Several parents said the local government of Hengnan County dispatched a large number of police officers to threaten the families and forced them to sign the deal, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

Wang Yuanfu, a parent of a student who died, was quoted as saying: "The secretary of the local political and legislative affairs committee said they would cremate the bodies whether we signed the deal or not."

Wang added officials even offered a 10,000 yuan (US$1,510) bonus for those who signed the compensation agreement first. Compensation for each family that lost a child was set at 188,000 yuan.

Deputy Chief of Hengnan County Xiao Liuzhong told the newspaper that police were deployed to maintain order in the hospital and that parents were not pressured to sign the deal.
