Parents claim being forced to sign compensation paper

PARENTS of the 14 schoolchildren killed when their van fell into a river in Hengnan County, Hunan Province on Monday said they were forced by local police to sign compensation deals.

They claimed the local government dispatched a large number of police officers to force them to sign the deal, Beijing News reported today.

Long Shunliang, a victim's relative, said there was clash between the parents and the police on Monday night and Tuesday morning, and he showed scratches on his arms from the fight.

"There were armed policemen everywhere. A local legal affairs official, surnamed Wu, said they would cremate the bodies whether we sign the deal or not," said Wang Yuanfu, another parent, adding local officials even offered a 10,000 yuan (US$1,510) award for those who signed first.

The deputy chief of Hengnan County, Xiao Liuzhong, argued that the police were deployed to maintain order in the hospital and the parents were not under any pressure to sign the deal.

A special team was set up yesterday by the Hunan Provincial Government to investigate the fatal accident. The final report is expected to be finished by mid January.
The overloaded three-wheeler fell into a river while crossing a bridge on the misty morning on Monday, killing 14 and injuring six. The vehicle was operating without a license.
