Parents donate kidneys to save children

PARENTS are donating a kidney each to save the lives of their son and daughter after donations raised enough money for the transplants they couldn’t afford.

The farming family from north China’s Hebei Province were in the news last year after the father, Li Qingzhong, was found giving his son dialysis at home to save money.

Duan Shuhua donated her kidney to 16-year-old Li Kai at a Beijing hospital on Wednesday, while the father will donate his kidney for their 26-year-old daughter Li Min after the mother and son are both stable.

Li had been giving his son dialysis three times a day at home, while the daughter, whose condition was said to be in its terminal stages, received treatment in hospital.

Li learned about dialysis at a Beijing hospital and set aside a room at his home to administer the treatment. He also taught his son how to operate the machine.

However, Li Kai’s condition deteriorated since autumn of last year and the parents decided to have tests to see if they might be a match.

Tests at the General Hospital of Armed Police Corps in Beijing found the father was a match for the daughter and the mother for the son.

The hospital waived its 20,000 yuan (US$323) fee when it learned of the family’s financial situation.

The father said the family had spent over 400,000 yuan for their children’s treatment and were about 100,000 yuan in debt. They were unable to afford the cost for transplants, which can be 300,000 yuan each.

However, the Chinese Red Cross Foundation stepped in to open a special account for donations from members of the public.
