Parents of sick kids complain of compensation
PARENTS of 15 children who fell ill after vaccinations in east China's Jiangxi Province complained the government's compensation offers, saying they don't make up for their pain and suffering.
The offers of up to 100,000 yuan (US$14,651), mainly to cover short-term medical costs and wage losses for parents, are far from enough to ensure the future health of the children, they complained to today's Dongguan Times newspaper.
The children received measles jabs last October at their schools in a Jiangxi health authority campaign to vaccinate 95 percent of children aged from eight months to 14 years.
They later developed an inflammation of blood vessels, leading to joint pains, bleeding, and stomach pains. The disease can cause irreversible kidney damage in about one in 100 cases, according to doctors.
The health authority has confirmed their illness was linked to the vaccinations.
But the number of sick children could double, according to some parents. The hospital where their children were treated was crammed with more children with the same symptoms, they told Dongguan Times.
They complained the treatment, mainly using hormones, has largely changed the children's body shape and health, resulting in poorer immunity, swelling, and extra hair growth in girls.
Seven-year-old Xiaobao has put on 10 kilograms since the treatment began, according to his father Cai Zhongjun. The boy had to undergo kidney dialysis during treatment, he added.
"The government's compensation offer is mainly for our parents, rather than the future life for our children," Cai complained.
Though doctors told him the medication is reducing, treatment will last another eight months, he said.
