Parents of wrongly executed son get 2m yuan

The parents of a man who was wrongly executed in 1996 were yesterday paid 2.05 million yuan (US$327,600) in compensation from the state.

After receiving the money, Shang Aiyun and Li Sanren said their first task would be to find a proper burial site for their son Huugjilt, who was killed at the age of 18 after being found guilty of rape and murder, Xinhua news agency reported.

As Huugjilt had been convicted of a crime, a local custom forbade his parents from burying him in the family’s plot.

The Inner Mongolia Higher People’s Court agreed to make the payout on December 30.

The sum represents compensation for Huugjilt’s lost earnings, his funeral expenses, and the mental anguish he suffered prior to conviction, it said.

The teenager was found guilty on May 23, 1996 of raping and killing a woman in a public toilet in Hohhot. He was executed less than a month later, on June 10.

Doubts about the ruling began to surface in 2005 when convicted killer Zhao Zhihong confessed to raping and killing several women, including the one linked to Huugjilt.

The regional higher court opened a review of the case on November 20 last year, and Huugjilt was declared innocent on December 15.

Meanwhile, an official probe into suspected disciplinary violations is currently under way. Following an initial investigation, prosecutors are questioning Feng Zhiming, the police officer in charge of the Huugjilt investigation, and who won promotion for its swift conclusion.
