Parents plead for end to girl鈥檚 suffering
THE PARENTS of a terminally-ill little girl in considerable pain are pleading with doctors to end her life.
Zhao Zihan, aged four, from Xunyi County in Xianyang, in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, was diagnosed with cancer of the eye two years ago. Despite having had an eye removed, the disease continued to spread.
In September, a tumor on her face was found to be malignant and doctors said the girl was too weak to undergo another operation.
Her father Zhao Lipeng and mother Zheng Lili, who have spent all their savings trying to help their daughter, say they now just want their daughter’s suffering to end.
“The pain and suffering of our daughter breaks our hearts,” Zhao Lipeng told the Beijing-based The Mirror newspaper.
“Doctors can’t save her life and it’s torture for us. We now hope that a hospital can take her in to end her pain. Through euthanasia she can leave peacefully,” Zhao added.
In 2014, the little girl was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a cancer of the retina of the eye, and last year had her left eye removed in Xi’an.
When cancer was discovered again in September, doctors said there was nothing that could be done for the child. Euthanasia is not permitted in China, and this case has sparked online debate on the issue.
Some people argued that it makes no sense to prolong the life of a child who is suffering greatly. Opponents say that abuses could see it forced on children who still haven’t developed abilities of judgment.
