Parents reach deal after newborn dies in hospital
AN agreement in the high-profile death of a newborn girl has been reached between the baby's family and the hospital where she died in Fujian Province, an investigation team said yesterday.
The baby's body was cremated, according to the team, which didn't give more details about the agreement.
Photos showing the 11-day-old girl had scars that looked like severe burns on her back went viral online last Thursday after she died in Quanzhou Children's Hospital in Quanzhou City, Fujian.
The hospital said on the death certificate that the baby died of a bacterial infection. However, the family suspected she died from burns caused by the hospital's incubator.
Zheng Yuying, grandmother of the infant, said there were obvious "burns" on the baby's back, buttocks and legs, and the family suspected she died from the injuries caused by the hospital's incubator.
According to Zheng, her granddaughter was sent to the hospital's intensive care unit after being born on July 6. Doctors said she suffered from a lack of oxygen to the brain and cardiac damage.
On July 14, the hospital informed the family the girl had recovered and that they could take her home on July 17. However, at around 8am that day, the hospital called the parents and informed them of the baby's death.
The incident triggered public distrust of the hospital. Some parents of newborns in the hospital asked for transfers to other medical facilities.
An investigation team was summoned in response to strong public concern.
