Parents seek help for teen who doesn’t sweat or feel pain

The parents of a 15-year-old boy who doesn’t feel pain or sweat are seeking help as his health has worsened.

From Ningshui Village in Zhejiang Province, the boy has had both conditions since he was born and doctors at the time said he wouldn’t live past his eighth birthday, Qianjiang Evening News reported today.

Since he doesn’t feel pain he hurts himself easily, his mother, Gao Lijuan, told the newspaper.

Anhidrosis, or the inability to sweat, is a dangerous condition because the body is unable to cool itself down. It can lead to overheating, which can be fatal.

His parents keep him in a room with the temperature constantly between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, the report said, adding his only pastime is watching television.

"It can be life threatening if he develops a fever," his mother was quoted as saying.

Gao stays with him all the time and the family lives on 2,500 yuan (US$403) per month, which the boy’s father earns.

The couple has taken him to many hospitals, but doctors have been unable to help the boy.

His health worsened recently as he was diagnosed with charcot triad and dysarthrosis, a condition of reduced joint motion due to disease, dislocation or deformity. He now struggles to stand.

The couple says they feel as though their son is dying slowly before their eyes.

They hope donations will allow them to visit better hospitals in Beijing or Shanghai and that doctors will be able to cure their son.

"We will not give up hope, no matter what," Gao told the newspaper.
