Parents sue over online pictures of abused boy
The biological parents of a boy involved in an abuse case by his adoptive mother are suing the man who posted online photographs of the 9-year-old with wounds all over his body.
The adoptive mother was detained two days later in April after police was alerted seeing the online photographs. The woman has been charged with intentional injury. Proceedings are ongoing.
A court in Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province, has accepted a new lawsuit which calls for an apology from the man and 200,000 yuan (US$31,300) compensation for infringing the boy’s rights, yesterday’s Yangtze Evening News reported.
The parents said the man, surnamed Xu, and posting as “Chaotingbanrixian,” had used the boy’s photograph without permission and breached his right to privacy by revealing that he was adopted.
Xu posted several pictures on weibo.com on April 3, showing the boy with whip marks all over his body, and said he had been continuously beaten by his adoptive mother. He obscured the boy’s face but said he had been legally adopted when he was 6 years old.
The boy’s parents said web users had subsequently revealed the boy’s name and his school, tagging him as “abused boy.” They said he hadn’t known he was adopted, but now realized the truth, which was an infringement of his privacy and a source of psychological problems.
He had been mocked at school after the claims surfaced and felt guilty about causing problems for his adoptive mother.
