Park promises top payout to ride victims

VICTIMS in the fatal ride on a space shuttle simulator at a south China amusement park, where six people died and 10 were injured, will get maximum compensation, the park's boss said today.

The six dead, including a family of three, were all Chinese nationals. The lives of two injured patrons were still in danger as they suffered from multiple broken bones, China National Radio reported today.

Initial investigation on Tuesday's accident in Shenzhen City ruled out the possibility that someone deliberately sabotaged the amusement ride. Investigation is still continuing.

"It was a mechanical accident for sure, but what caused the accident is still unknown," said an official named Xiao Wenhong.

Zeng Hui, the boss of Shenzhen's Overseas Chinese Town East, which owned the Ecoventure Valley amusement park where the accident took place, bowed and said sorry to the victims.

He said the victims' families will get maximum compensation, without specifying how much.

Some survivors said they heard an explosion before oil spilled on them shortly after the "Space Journey" ride started.

But others said the accident was caused when one of the 11 compartments, which hold four riders each, plunged to the ground and hit the others.

The ride was suspended from operation for three days.

The group that ran the amusement park also owns Happy Valley in Shanghai, which experienced frequent glitches after it opened last September.

The Shanghai park authority said they ran a security overhaul last night and made sure that every ride in the park is safe.
