Partial lunar eclipse on Saturday

RESIDENTS in southeastern cities will see a one-hour partial lunar eclipse on Saturday night, when nearly half the moon will be plunged into total darkness.

In Shanghai, the moon will enter the earth's shadow at 6:16 pm and when it rises at 7pm, people will see a dim moon with part of it missing as the earth blocks the sunlight on its surface.

At 7:39pm, the moon will be nearly half eclipsed and will be seen fully again at 9 pm, when it leaves the earth's shadow, reported China News Service today.

People in Shanghai, Beijing, Hongkong, Macau and other eastern cities can watch this astronomical event with naked eyes if the weather is clear, said the Guangzhou Wuyang Planetarium today.

However, those in western regions such as Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region won't be able to see this astronomical spectacle.

This is a precursor to a total lunar eclipse scheduled for December 21. Three lunar eclipses are due this year. The first occurred on January 1.

A lunar eclipse occurs only when the sun, earth and moon are aligned exactly or very closely with the earth in the middle.
