Party defends Wenzhou property officials

PARTY disciplinary watchdogs in Wenzhou City have defended the innocence of property officials accused of buying homes cheaply from developers.

Just three of 32 real estate officials named in an Internet forum had recently bought houses and these were at market prices, according officials in the east China city cited by Youth Times today.

The three were helping relatives to buy houses, the authorities said in a five-minute press conference with no questions allowed.

They paid 28,000 yuan (US$4,100) a square meter, lower than the market price of over 30,000 yuan, but Party officials said the developer offered a 2 percent discount.

Reporters failed to contact any official at the Wenzhou real estate administrative bureau as the door was closed and officials were said to be on business trips.
