Party elects leaders for next 5 years
THE Communist Party of China unveiled its new leadership yesterday, with the 19th CPC Central Committee set to lead the Party for the next five years.
Elected by 2,336 delegates at the closing session of the 19th CPC National Congress, the new Central Committee comprises 204 members and 172 alternate members.
“The congress elected a new Central Committee of the Party, realizing organizational succession,” President Xi Jinping said while addressing the closing session at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Xi, 64, was elected into the new Central Committee. He was general secretary of the 18th CPC Central Committee.
Also elected were Premier Li Keqiang, Wang Huning, Liu Qibao, Xu Qiliang, Sun Chunlan, Wang Yang, Zhang Chunxian, Zhao Leji, Hu Chunhua, Li Zhanshu and Han Zheng.
Premier Li, 62, is member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 18th Central Committee.
The other officials are all members of the Political Bureau of the 18th CPC Central Committee.
Wang Huning, 62, is director of the Policy Research Office of the Central Committee.
Liu Qibao, 64, is member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee and head of its publicity department.
Xu Qiliang, 67, is vice chairman of the Central Military Commission.
Sun Chunlan, 67, is head of the Central Committee’s United Front Work Department.
Wang Yang, 62, is vice premier.
Zhang Chunxian, 64, is deputy head of the Central Leading Group for Party Building and deputy head of the Central Coordinating Group for Work on the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Zhao Leji, 60, is member of the Central Committee’s Secretariat and head of its organization department.
Hu Chunhua, 54, is secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee.
Li Zhanshu, 67, is member of Central Committee’s Secretariat, director of its general office and secretary of the Working Committee of the Organs Directly Under the CPC Central Committee.
Han Zheng, 63, is secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee.
The 19th Central Committee will elect the Political Bureau, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and the general secretary at its first plenary session scheduled for today.
Before the formal election yesterday, delegates to the congress carried out preliminary elections for candidates of members and alternate members of the 19th Central Committee and candidates of members of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
According to the Party Constitution, the highest leading body of the Party is the National Congress and the Central Committee it elects, and all constituent organizations and members of the Party are subordinate to the National Congress and the Central Committee.
The National Congress is held every five years.
