Party expels ex-Sinopec executive

A FORMER general manager of energy giant Sinopec Group has been expelled from the Party and faces prosecution for crimes that include bribery and abuse of power, the Party’s anti-corruption watchdog said yesterday.

Wang Tianpu, a 53-year-old oil industry veteran, was put under investigation in April.

In a brief statement, the watchdog accused him of violating rules by accepting money and seeking profits for relatives’ businesses by taking advantage of his position. Wang continued to indulge his relatives even after warnings from authorities, according to a statement from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

He also flouted frugality rules by using public funds for banquets and embezzling public money, the watchdog said, adding that he also accepted bribes.

Support for decision

Wang’s illegal gains have been seized, the statement said.

“Wang Tianpu was a senior leadership cadre in the Party, and he severely broke discipline,” the watchdog said. His case has been handed over to the legal authorities, it added.

“We support the decision of the Party center and have zero tolerance for corruption,” a Sinopec official told reporters.

State-owned Sinopec Group is the parent of Sinopec Corp, Asia’s largest oil refiner.

China is stepping up inspections this year at conglomerates owned by the central government as part of its anti-graft efforts.
