Party expels former China Mobile executive

A FORMER China Mobile executive, who is awaiting prosecution on graft charges, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China.

Zhang Chunjiang was expelled for "serious violations of the discipline and the law," Xinhua news agency reported yesterday, citing the Party's disciplinary watchdog.

Zhang Chunjiang was dismissed as deputy general manager of China Mobile in January over unspecified financial irregularities.

Xinhua said Zhang was accused of selling favors and receiving "a huge amount of bribes" but gave no other details.

Chinese business magazine Caijing said in January that Zhang was suspected of concealing losses ahead of a 2008 merger with rival China Unicom.

China Mobile is the parent of Hong Kong-listed China Mobile Ltd, where Zhang served as vice chairman and executive director.

Zhang was also a former chairman of China Netcom Ltd.
