Party kicks out ‘morally degenerate’ top official
A FORMER deputy chief of China’s top planning agency has been thrown out of the Communist Party and will be prosecuted for corruption, following allegations that were first posted online.
Liu Tienan was expelled from the Party and removed from public office for discipline and law violations, according to a statement by the Party’s disciplinary watchdog yesterday.
It said an investigation had found that Liu, former deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, took bribes and abused his power.
The Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said Liu’s unlawful gains have been confiscated and his case has been handed over to prosecutors.
Liu “took advantage of his position to seek profits for others, and both Liu and his family accepted huge amount of bribes,” its statement said.
The disciplinary agency also called Liu “morally degenerate.” No further details were provided.
The allegations against Liu were first made online by Chinese journalist Luo Changping, a deputy editor-in-chief of Caijing magazine.
In December, Luo posted a number of allegations about Liu on his Sina Weibo microblog, accusing him of colluding with a businessman for benefits, falsifying his education background, and threatening to kill his mistress.
A woman described as Liu’s mistress reportedly provided information that Liu had helped defraud banks of US$200 million.
The allegations came amid an ongoing anti-corruption campaign after President Xi Jinping vowed to fight graft with the aim of building a clean government.
Liu, until March also head of the National Energy Administration, was in Moscow with Vice Premier Wang Qishan for an energy conference when the scandal first broke.
Liu, 59, was dismissed from his post for serious disciplinary violations in May.
