Party membership for sale in village

A VILLAGE in Zhejiang Province has generated controversy after it was found people were forced to donate several thousand yuan in order to become a Party member.

Xinsheng Village in Zhejiang openly attached a price tag to Party membership. People have to donate at least 6,000 yuan (US$924) to become a member, a person posted on an online forum, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Several villagers confirmed the allegation and said everyone has to obey it. In some cases, Party memberships were secured for more than 10,000 yuan.

A woman surnamed Yuan paid 8,000 yuan to get her son into the Party.

"Everyone pays," Yuan was quoted as saying. "How can we refuse?"

The Party branch of Xinsheng Village started to encourage member candidates to "voluntarily" donate money in 2007.

"Donations are part of the evaluation process for prospective members. If you don't donate, how can you prove you are motivated?" said Chen Yunliang, Party chief of Xinsheng Village.

Some poverty-stricken villagers said the selection criteria put them at a disadvantage.
