Passenger detained for opening plane door

A PASSENGER has been detained for five days for opening an emergency door out of curiosity, forcing the plane to fly back in east China's Zhejiang Province on Saturday.

The plane took off at 17:10 at Xiaoshan airport in Zhejiang's capital Hangzhou City and was headed to Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Zhejiang police said yesterday.

Twenty minutes later, the pilot detected an emergency report and immediately flew the plane back to Xiaoshan airport.

Examination found a passenger surnamed Tong had accidentally opened the plane's emergency door out of curiosity before the flight started.

When the plane flew to 9,000 meters above, air forced into the cabin through the door crack caused abnormal pressure in the cabin and sparked an emergency report.

The accident resulted in a loss of 15,000 yuan (US$2,209). Tong, 28, a financial staff member of a foreign trade company, was detained for five days.

The plane took off again at 19:30.
