Passengers boycott airline over compensation

A China Eastern airplane took off from Chongqing airport early today, leaving 91 passengers behind because they refused to get onboard and wanted more compensation for flight delay.

Flight MU8086 from Chongqing to Beijing was delayed for four hours last night due to air traffic control and was due to take off at 12am today.

China Eastern gave each of the 115 passengers 100 yuan in compensation, but many refused to get onboard.

"We have to take a taxi after arriving in Beijing after midnight; 100 yuan is hardly enough for the taxi fare," said Li Shengming, one of the protestors.

The plane took off after airlines officials failed to persuade the 91 protesting passengers to get onboard.

China Eastern said the flight is operated by China United Airlines. China Eastern only handles ticket issues and has no right to postpone the takeoff of the flight.

The Shanghai-based carrier put the 91 passengers in a hotel. They switched to an Air China flight that left Chongqing around 10am.
