Passengers scared when train moves backward

A bullet train caused great panic among passengers yesterday afternoon when it experienced a power failure and suddenly moved backward on the Wuhan-Guangzhou route.

The railway operator today said the driver was following the right procedure required in the emergency of a power outage.

Train G1160 came to a full stop at 4:13pm, about one hour after it left the Guangzhou station in the capital of Guangdong Province, when the driver noticed the track lost electricity.

The driver first made sure no other trains were passing through this section and backed the train into the East Lechang Station to change tracks and continue the journey, the Guangzhou Railway Group said.

Workers restored power supply at 6:09pm and the train returned to the original track 20 minutes later, instead of choosing a different one, the company said in a statement.

It is a common practice to back the train if the track ahead loses electricity, it said without disclosing the cause of the power failure or citing previous cases of backing a train, Changjiang Daily reported.

Passengers said they were trapped in hot and stuffy carriages for one hour when the train suddenly moved in reverse for 20 kilometers.
