Patient dumped in hospital rubbish heap
A MAN badly injured in a road accident was dumped on a rubbish dump by staff at a hospital in Xintian County in central Hunan Province because he couldn't tell them who he was.
Xie Tongjun had been discovered with serious head injuries in a field, with pieces of his motorcycle strewn around him, the Procuratorial Daily reported yesterday.
The middle school teacher had been missing for three days before being found by local resident Deng Shunzhong. Deng called an ambulance to take Xie to Xintian County Chinese Medicine Hospital.
But as Xie could not say who he was and had no identification, hospital staff left him on a nearby rubbish heap days later.
By this time, Deng had made contact with Xie's family, who rushed to the hospital and were told by witnesses where their relative could be found.
"His face was covered with scabs, many of which had festered, and he was surrounded by dirt and smelled really bad," a family member told the newspaper.
Witnesses told the family that Xie had been in a confused state when admitted on November 18 last year and was thrown out four days later, when the hospital was sure that no one would claim him.
Last December, a government investigation concluded that Xintian County Chinese Medicine Hospital had abandoned Xie and personnel involved were sacked.
Xie is still suffering from the incident. "He wakes in the middle of the night, sits up in bed and screams," his wife said.
