Patient of Beijing Tongren Hospital dies of fake drug

Beijing Drug Administration affirmed yesterday that a Beijing hospital had used a counterfeit medicine which led to the death of a patient, the local Beijing Times reported today.

The 57-year-old patient Li Zhong was told by Beijing Tongren Hospital in April that he was suffering from a superbug infection and needed polymyxin B injection. Li's family followed the doctor's advice and bought the medicine from an outside drug store. But Li died soon after the hospital gave him the injection, the report said.

An official with Beijing Drug Administration said the hospital doctors should have known that it was a fake drug before using it on the patient and the administration would to punish the hospital with a fine.

"That drug had no Chinese label or license code. It was obviously imported illegally from abroad," the official said. "We treat any medicine that is not approved by the National Food & Drug Administration as counterfeit."
