Payments raised for families of the dead

CHINA has almost doubled the amount of compensation that will be paid to relatives of the victims of last Saturday's fatal train collision to 915,000 yuan (US$142,000) per deceased family member, sources with the rescue command center in Wenzhou said yesterday.

The death toll from the accident has risen to 40 after a seriously injured passenger died.

The command center under the State Council said it reached an agreement with the relatives of the victims to raise the compensation amount from 500,000 yuan based on the principle of "putting people first."

The payments will include death compensation, funeral expenses, compensation for emotional distress and one-off aid that will help cover living expenses for victims' children.

The Ministry of Railways will provide the compensation.

The center said it was working on a compensation agreement for those injured. The accident left 191 people injured, 11 of them seriously.

Chen Wei, from the southeast Fujian Province, was the latest victim. He died at about 11pm on Thursday.
