Payout for baby’s finger joint cut off in cesarean

A HOSPITAL in a south China has paid a family 100,000 yuan (US$16,400) compensation after a doctor cut off part of a baby’s finger during a cesarean section delivery.

A photograph posted online shows the baby boy with the first joint missing from the index finger on his right hand, after it was cut off by an obstetrician at the Qingnan District People’s Hospital in Qingzhou city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The hospital has also covered medical expenses for the delivery, the Nanguo Morning Post reported.

The 22-year-old mother, surnamed Fu, underwent an emergency c-section on January 4, as the size of her baby’s head was making a natural birth difficult.

After a three-hour operation, Fu gave birth to a boy weighing 3.8 kilograms but bleeding from his finger.

Fu was initially told the injury was minor, but the extent of the wound and its cause were confirmed two days later.

The family has since struggled to accept that the boy, who was born healthy, lost a fingertip, the baby’s father, surnamed Zeng, said.

It casts a shadow over the child’s life, said Zeng, who reported the case to the local health bureau last week.

The family had demanded compensation of 500,000 yuan, the report said.

The doctor who helped deliver the baby has 20 years’ clinical experience and the case was an accident, said a hospital official.

Officials said the whereabouts of the finger joint are unknown, but X-rays showed it was not left inside Fu.

The baby was discharged from hospital yesterday.
