Payouts agreed for school bus dead
FAMILIES of children killed when an overloaded kindergarten minibus plunged into a pond in central China’s Hunan Province have agreed compensation terms.
Eight children, two teachers and the driver died in the accident in the village of Ganzi, near the provincial capital of Changsha, on Thursday.
The minibus was traveling from Lelewang Kindergarten in Xiangtan City at the time.
On Saturday, the families of five children from Ganzi signed compensation agreements with Changsha’s Yuelu District, which administers the village, Legal Evening News reported yesterday.
After the funerals tomorrow, 560,000 yuan (US$90,270) will be paid for each child.
The other three children who died came from Xiangtan City, and it is not known if compensation has been agreed with the local government there.
Meanwhile, police said two senior staff members from Lelewang have been held.
Senior manager Wang Changhai and Wang Nishang, the school’s legal representative, have been detained over liability for the accident, Changsha police announced on Saturday.
An initial investigation said overloading and using an unauthorized route appeared to be the main factors.
The minivan, with a capacity of eight, left the school with 15 people onboard and was running on a remote road which was not the official route.
Four children had got off the bus before the accident.
Investigators said the driver had taken the job just days before and lacked training.
Villagers said the crash might have been caused by speeding, said the Legal Evening News.
This is the latest in a string of accidents involving school buses, leading to public anger over poor safety measures.
