Peeved by fines, truck owner attempts suicide
A CENTRAL Chinese city is investigating the case of a truck owner who tried to commit suicide after being harassed with fines.
The woman truck owner Wen Li was discharged from a local hospital in Yongcheng City, Henan Province, yesterday after receiving emergency treatment, Xinhua news agency reported.
The truck was returned to her.
Wen’s elder brother Liu Huaizhou said he and his sister bought two trucks for over 600,000 yuan in April but were fined over 200,000 yuan within half a year, Legal Evening News said.
Wen’s driver Guo Wanli said their truck was stopped by transportation officers on November 14 and they were asked to show “prepaid fine tickets” — receipts issued by authorities after truck owners pay the fines for overloading in advance. An annual ticket, which costs 3,000 yuan, is issued by transportation authorities. Another 3,000-yuan ticket is issued by highways authorities every month. Truck owners have to buy both the tickets.
After checking the annual ticket, the officers called the highway authorities to send officials to check the monthly tickets. Although Wen’s monthly ticket was valid, the highway officials insisted that Wen should still pay a fine.
One officer reportedly told Guo and Wen that they should pay extra despite both tickets being valid.
An upset Wen left but returned with a bottle of pesticide. She told the officials that she would drink the pesticide if they didn’t let her truck pass.
When the officials said they didn’t care, Wen drank from the bottle.
