Peru author begins visit

PERUVIAN writer and Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa will arrive in China today to start a nine-day visit to Shanghai and Beijing.

During his visit, the 75-year-old Llosa will discuss literature with renowned Chinese writers, according to the Shanghai-based online book vendor 99Read.

Llosa's visit is jointly organized by 99Read, the Beijing-based Institute of Cervantes, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and two Chinese universities.

Llosa is a major representative of Latin American literature, having written more than 30 novels, plays and essays, including "The Green House" and "Conversation in the Cathedral."

He won the 2010 Nobel Prize in literature for his "cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt and defeat."

Llosa will deliver a speech titled "A Writer's Testimony" at the Shanghai International Studies University on Tuesday.
