Peruvian 'drove drunk'

A PERUVIAN driver in south China's Guangdong Province is being prosecuted for drunk driving, local authorities said yesterday.

According to the Zhongshan Municipal People's Procuratorate, Amoretti Sanchez Fernando Dodin works as the chief representative of an international corporation in the city of Zhongshan.

About 3am On May 25, Dodin stopped his car while driving home and decided to sleep in the vehicle. But his car rolled on to a curb after he failed to apply his brakes.

A blood test a showed that Dodin had 213 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliters of blood in his system. Chinese law defines intoxication as a blood alcohol level of 80 milligrams or more of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood.

The Peruvian admitted to police that he had drunk alcohol before driving his car.

Dodin is the first foreign driver to be prosecuted for drunk driving in Zhongshan since a May 1 Criminal Law amendment that imposed harsher punishments for drunk drivers.
