Pharmacies to sell baby formulas on trial

Baby formulas will be sold at pharmacies on a trial basis and blacklisted companies will be banned from milk powder import and export business when new regulations take effect in China.
The new regulations, the toughest measures against malpractices in milk powder production, import and distribution, are issued jointly by nine ministries and administrations.
Selling baby formula through drug stores can guarantee product quality because the management of pharmacies is stricter and more standard, said Teng Jiacai, deputy director of the State Food and Drug Administration.
The practice will be introduced on a trial basis and baby formulas less than 30 days before the expiration date should be taken off the shelf or marked with a warning, he said.
Substandard milk powder imported from other countries shall be eliminated from the market, he added.
Foreign exporters need to register with Chinese quality inspectors before May 2014, in order will not be allowed to sell milk powder to China, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
Companies found guilty of cheating and other dishonest practices will be blacklisted and banned from baby formula trade, the administration said.
Baby formulas with remaining shelf life less than three months will be banned from importing into China. All products need to have a Chinese description before entering the Chinese market.
