Philanthropist jailed for crime made 24 years ago

Lin Jie, a jeweler-turned philanthropist, was sentenced by a court in Zhejiang Province to three years in prison last week for cheating a state-owned textile factory out of 590,000 yuan (US$94,460) 24 years ago. His crime almost made the factory bankrupt.

Later, Lin changed his name and began to work as a wristwatch repairman. Before his arrest, Lin had become a successful jewelry dealer in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and was vice chairman of Nanning Private Entrepreneurs Association and Guangxi Jewelers Association.

Lin was very active in local charity work and was elected into the Xingning District Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
