Phone boss sentenced for bribery

THE former president of China Mobile Group Chong-qing was sentenced to a two-year stay of execution for graft in the southwest municipality of Chonqging yesterday.

Shen Changfu, a former lawmaker of the national legislature and board chairman and president of China Mobile Group Chongqing, accepted more than 36.16 million yuan (US$5.7 million) in bribes from 1990 to 2010, according to the judgment of Chongqing's No. 5 Intermediate People's Court.

Shen was detained in late October last year. The last time he appeared in public was October 13 last year when he attended a signing ceremony involving China Mobile and Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

In spite of his serious crimes, he received a lighter punishment as he confessed to most of the bribery charges and handed back all money illegally gained, according to the court.

Shen has not launched an appeal.

Shen Juncheng, Shen Changfu's son, also stood trial yesterday for bribery.

The court said judgment will be handed down soon.
