Phony security agent gets lengthy jail term

A MAN in Beijing was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for fraud after swindling 24,000 yuan (US$3,530) from a Central China Television journalist by saying he was the head of the ?¨State Intelligence Bureau? and 140,000 yuan from a man who wanted to buy a home.

The CCTV victim, identified by her surname Wang, believed the swindler was an intelligence agent and had sex with him after he promised her permanent residence in Beijing and to help her career, a Beijing-based newspaper reported yesterday.

The 25-year-old woman, a program editor for CCTV, met Cheng Chaojun, the swindler, in October 2007 and asked Cheng to help her get permanent residence in Beijing.

Cheng said he was the director of the non-existent State Intelligence Bureau and the editor of an internal publication, called Beijing Times.

Wang handed 24,000 yuan to Cheng in April 2008, supposedly as a fee to apply for permanent residence.

Cheng later told Wang he wanted her to work as an agent for the intelligence bureau. Cheng told Wang agents sometimes had to have sex with people in order to get information and used this as an excuse to have sex with Wang.

The journalist was excited about being an agent as she wanted to punish corrupt officials in her hometown, the newspaper reported.

After last year??s Sichuan earthquake, Cheng told Wang to travel to the disaster area to cover the events for the intelligence bureau??s newspaper. Wang wanted to go because she wasn??t chosen by CCTV to report on the disaster. Wang spent 10,000 yuan reporting the earthquake but was never reimbursed by Cheng.

The Beijing Haidian District People??s Court said Cheng had also cheated 140,000 yuan out of a victim surnamed Rao. Cheng pretended to be the landlord of the apartment he was renting and tried to sell it to the victim.
