Piano student executed today for intentional murder
THE piano student who stabbed a woman to death after accidentally knocking her down with his car in Xi'an, capital of the northwestern Shaanxi Province, last October was executed this morning.
The Shaanxi Province Higher People's Court upheld the death sentence on Yao Jiaxin, the 21-year-old student of the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, on May 20 after Yao filed an appeal against the ruling given by the Xi'an Intermediate People's Court on April 22.
Yao stabbed Zhang Miao, the victim, to death with a knife after he found Zhang was trying to remember his car plate number. Fearing the peasant woman would be difficult to deal with, Yao stabbed her several times and fled the scene, the Legal Daily reported today.
In his hasty flight, Yao hit two more pedestrians and was blocked by a crowd as he tried to run away. Police came and brought him to a police station where he said nothing about the murder. It was not until the second day that he surrendered himself to the police.
The Xi'an Intermediate People's Court sentenced Yao to death for intentional murder and ordered him to pay 45,498 yuan (US$7,023) in compensation to Zhang's family on April 22.
The court dismissed a plea from Yao's lawyer who said Yao had surrendered himself to police and committed the killing on an impulse.
