Pig celebrates quake survival with party

MUSEUM staff in Sichuan Province hosted a birthday party today for a pig named Mr Strongwill after it survived 36 days under debris during the massive earthquake that hit in 2008.

The pig's original owner Wan Xinming and the soldiers who rescued it attended the party to celebrate the second anniversary of the pig's survival, Chengdu Business Daily reported.

Wan said he had not seen the pig for almost a year. The last time he and his wife visited the museum, Mr Strongwill "recognized them." The report said a cake was baked to celebrate the reunion.

The pig was moved to Jianchuan Museum in the provincial capital Chengdu days after it was rescued in 2008. The curator paid 3,008 yuan (US$440) to buy the pig and said he will keep it until it dies. The curator named it Zhu Jianqiang, meaning strong-willed pig.

Mr Strongwill lost nearly 100 kilograms during his ordeal but was found alive on June 17, 2008. It was reported to have survived on charcoal under the debris.
