Pig drug factories busted
THREE underground factories making a banned drug used by pig raisers to produce leaner pork were raided in central China's Henan Province, investigators said yesterday.
In a major breakthrough, the joint team, led by the State Council, tracked down the source of the clenbuterol - known to Chinese as "lean meat powder," - Liu Peizhi, head of the team told Xinhua news agency.
A total of 68 people, including pig raisers, people selling the drug and two staffers in charge of purchasing in slaughterhouses, were under investigation or in detention by Thursday. Some 43 government officials are also being investigated.
Liu said the crackdown will extend to the whole country.
Several batches of pig feed mixed with the additive were confiscated, Liu said.
People who used the banned drug in food production and caused death or serious damage to health could face the death penalty, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau in east China's Shandong Province said in a notice sent to pig raisers there.
In the notice, the bureau reiterated all the penalties for those who produce, sell or use the banned drug.
Earlier this month, China's Central Television reported the banned drug was being fed to pigs as a matter of course in Henan.
Jiyuan Shuanghui Food, a Henan subsidiary of the Shuanghui Group, was found to be slaughtering pigs fed the banned drug.
