Pigs鈥 carcasses dumped on mountain
Five people have been detained on suspicion of dumping 300 tons of diseased pigs in a mountainous area of Huzhou in east China鈥檚 Zhejiang Province.
The city government has accused Huzhou Industrial and Medical Waste Treatment Co of sending pigs that died of disease to a landfill rather than for cremation between 2013 and 2014.
A police investigation showed the company, responsible for disposing of the city鈥檚 dead pigs, had a refrigerated storage facility with a capacity of 50 tons. On six occasions, however, the company dumped carcasses at three sites at Dayin Mountain when it was full.
Over the past week, the Huzhou government dug out 224 tons of decomposed carcasses and sludge.
A report by the city鈥檚 agricultural department said no diseases that would affect humans had been found.
Police and relevant authorities have been ordered to ensure that no carcasses are left in the soil and an environmental impact assessment is to be carried out. The Zhejiang provincial government has sent inspectors to oversee the process.
East China provinces are known for pig breeding, and there are rules for disposing of carcasses. Illegal dumping can sometimes occur when dealers try to cut costs.
