Pigs relax to music before slaughter

A PIG deserves at least 12 hours of solitude, walking, patting, and music if possible before it is slaughtered, a central China city has ruled.

Zhenzhou City Commerce Commission laid down the rules before a pig is killed as a part of a humane slaughter campaign. They said a peaceful slaughterhouse would add more flavor to the pork, reported Henan Business Daily today.

Music should be played and butchers need to help the pigs to relax, the officials said. Any slaughterhouse found violating the rules will be fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,324), according to the officials.

An advocate of the humane killing techniques told Zhenzhou Evening News that he had never heard of any mandatory rules like this. Slaughterhouse owners are complaining about the cost of meeting the new rules.
