Plan calls for protection of groundwater resources
CHINA has introduced the country's first national plan on groundwater pollution control.
The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has already approved the national plan on groundwater pollution control for 2011-2020.
It calls for a combination of legal, economic, technological and administrative measures to protect groundwater.
A total of 34.66 billion yuan (US$5.45 billion) will be invested in the prevention and treatment of groundwater pollution between 2011-2020.
The money will be invested in six categories of projects: survey, prevention, cleaning up groundwater pollution, control of pollution in underground drinking water sources, agriculture-related groundwater pollution control, and monitoring underground water resources.
Municipal sewage, household garbage, industrial waste and seepage of fertilizers and pesticides have polluted the groundwater in some parts of China, seriously affecting economic production and people's lives, according to officials with the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
Under the plan, China will form a general understanding of the country's groundwater pollution situation and preliminarily bring the sources of pollution under control by 2015.
Furthermore, the country aims to fully monitor the typical sources of groundwater pollution and ensure underground drinking water sources are well protected by 2020, according to the plan.
Zhao Hualin, a senior pollution control official with the ministry, said industries related to groundwater treatment will be a new growth point in the environmental protection sector, adding that policy initiatives will be introduced to foster the industry's development.
