Plan to show jail videos to families
POLICE in northwest China plan to show jail security videos to the families of inmates in line with a state campaign to combat the abuse of prisoners.
Police in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region will trial publishing videos from detention houses and prisons in Ningxia's Tongxin County, today's Beijing Times reported.
Police will expand the coverage to all detention houses and jails in the region by the end of this year, Gao Hongning, vice director of Ningxia police, said.
The videos will show the families the cells of inmates, especially those in detention houses, who, according to law, are not allowed to meet their families, Feng Binzhong, vice director of Tongxin police, said.
Police throughout the country have been ordered to join a three-month campaign to combat the abuse of prisoners, the Ministry of Public Security said, following a series of accusations over suspicious deaths in custody.
The campaign is aimed at eliminating the misuse of authority and boosting awareness of the law and human rights, according to a notice posted on Tuesday on the Website of the ministry, which oversees the police.
