Plane passenger ‘endangered safety’
Authorities said yesterday that passengers in China had opened airplane emergency doors without authorization 12 times this year during taxiing or while at a standstill.
They were commenting as one of the passengers went on trial yesterday in Yanji in northeast China’s Jilin Province.
China’s Civil Aviation Administration of China said the female passenger was charged with endangering public safety.
She is said to have opened the emergency door of an Asiana Airlines plane while the aircraft was in motion.
The passenger, surnamed Piao, is accused of opening the door on February 12 and activating the emergency escape slide while the plane was taxiing before take-off, the administration said in a statement.
The crew had to ground the plane and the flight was delayed by four hours, which affected traffic at the Yanji Airport, the statement said.
After an investigation, police arrested the suspect on February 23.
China’s civil aviation security regulation states that opening the emergency door without authorization is forbidden.
