Plans to expand railway vehicle transport service

RAILWAY authorities in Beijing are planning to expand a car transport service which proved popular on a Beijing-Hangzhou bullet train route during the National Day holiday.

The service will probably be launched on lines between the capital and southwest China, Tibet or Qinghai, the Legal Evening News reported, citing Zhu Dianping, an official with the Beijing Railway Administration.

On the eve of the weeklong National Holiday, some 60 families took the overnight bullet train from Beijing to Hangzhou, arriving at the city’s East Station at 7:12am on October 1. Their cars, which had been loaded in Beijing on September 28, were waiting to be picked up at Hangzhou’s Genshanmen Station, a 4.4 kilometer taxi ride away.

The return trip delivered passengers back to Beijing on Tuesday morning where their cars were waiting for them.

The cost of car transportation was not cheap at 6,000 yuan (US$977) or 8,000 yuan depending on the size of the vehicle, but all the slots quickly sold out.

“My friends and I started our trip to Hangzhou the same day from Beijing, but they were still hours away when I arrived as they were driving while my car and I went by train,” one driver told the newspaper.

Another couple, who had a young daughter, said the service was safe and convenient, and better than renting a vehicle in Hangzhou.

“If I rent a car, there is usually no children’s safety seat, and we can put all our luggage in the car to be transported,” the mother told the newspaper.
