‘Pleasant Goat’ producer must pay after kids burned imitating cartoon

THE company that produces the award-winning Chinese cartoon "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf" was ordered today by a court to pay compensation to two boys who suffered severe burns acting out a scene from the TV series.

The Guangdong Creative Power Entertaining Co Ltd didn’t leave out violent scenes or warn viewers not to imitate the characters, which the court said influences young children’s cognitive development and misleads them.

The company was ordered to pay 39,252 yuan (US$6,464), said the Donghai County People’s Court of eastern Jiangsu Province.

The incident occurred in Donghai on April 6. A boy surnamed Li, 10, tied the brothers, age 5 and 8, to a tree like was done with the lamb in the cartoon, and set fire to the grass underneath.

They had planned to just reenact the part where the evil wolf tries to turn an innocent lamb into a kebab, but the fire soon spread and two brothers were severely injured.
The younger brother suffered burns to 80 percent of his body, the older boy 40 percent.

During the trial, Li’s parents were ordered to pay 157,009 yuan for their son’s role. Li has had reached the age of 10 and should take part of the responsibility, the court said.
