Poison soup killer gets death
A FORMER township official in south China's Guangdong Province was sentenced to death yesterday for killing a provincial legislator with a poisonous herb after stealing large amounts of money from the victim, the Nanfang Daily reported.
Huang Guang, former deputy head of Bajia Town Agricultural Office in Yangchun City, was also ordered to pay about 580,000 yuan (US$92,858) to the victim's family after his conviction for both fraud and murder, the Yangjiang City Intermediate People's Court ruled.
The court said Huang decided to kill Long Liyuan, after swindling more than 1.35 million yuan from Long, who was also an entrepreneur and chaired a wood processing company in Guangdong's Gaozhou City.
Long went to lunch with Huang and a friend at a local restaurant on December 23, 2011 after visiting a forest in Bajia Town.
The court said Huang asked the owner of the restaurant to prepare a cat meat hotpot and sneaked into the kitchen, where he put gelsemium elegan, a poisonous herb also known as "heartbreak grass," into the soup. He soaked the toxic herbs for a few minutes and threw them away.
Long said the soup was bitter but Huang persuaded him to eat by claiming it might have been made with extra Chinese medicines or the gallbladder of the cat was broken.
All three, including Huang himself, ate the cat meat soup and began to throw up.
Long, who ate more than the other two, died in the hospital. Huang and Long's friend survived after medical treatment.
