Poison suspect detained

CHINESE police have detained a suspect for allegedly poisoning frozen dumplings two years ago that were exported to Japan and made 10 people ill.

The suspect, Lu Yueting, 36, poisoned the dumplings when he worked as a temporary employee at Tianyang Food Plant based in north China's Hebei Province, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement on Friday.

Lu was dissatisfied with his wages and did not get on well with several colleagues, so he decided to take revenge.

He has confessed and police have found the instrument he used to inject the poison. Several witness statements also have been collected, the ministry said.

Japanese media reported in January 2008 that 10 people fell ill after eating frozen meat dumplings produced by Tianyang. Shortly after the incident, the plant was investigated by both Chinese and Japanese authorities, but no production problems were found.

The plant had been exporting to Japan for 10 years prior to the incident. The matter is still being investigated.
